Here's the questions for this week:
Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Do they all have a kick ass heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?
A:
Wow, that's a hard question. Even though some of my favorite books have similar characters, at lot of them don't. Honestly, thinking about it, my main characters have to be strong and show growth. Further, they have to be sympathetic in some way. However, that being said, there are some books I absolutely love but hate the characters. One example of this is Hamlet. I hated Hamlet and wished he would just stop whining about whether he should kill himself and just do it! That being said, the characters are not limited to one gender.I am curious to see how other people answer this question ^_^
haha I love your example. I agree about the characters. I have to be able to understand their actions otherwise the book wouldn't make sense.

New follower here, love your answer. I'm a fan of sympathetic characters but my favorite book of all time, Geek Love by Katherine Dunn, doesn't feature one character you can get behind. Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite is another one (though I did like Ghost) Still, somehow these work for me.
ReplyDeleteHhah I've hated some characters too but ended up loving the book because it was just so good. Great answer! Hope you have a great Friday :)

The characters are definitely the most important thing for me. I find it difficult to read a book if I don't like the characters. New follower saying hi!

I'm usually a character-driven reader as well. But, like you said, there are some books that I like but can hate the characters. Sometimes, hating the characters is what makes me like the book, lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog - I'm returning the follow! :) I felt the same way about Hamlet, lol!

The Hamlet comment made me smile, because I completely agree. He was a whiner but the book was so good or more the story was what made it great. I also love when the characters grow whether it's is physical capabilities, mentally, or through others. My favorite is when they aren't the badass hero in the beginning but by the end you're rooting for them because you know what a big deal it is for them to have made it that far. Oh and I'm following back :)
